San Antonio Express-News

Mike Leary, the editor of the San Antonio Express-News, grew up in Rice Lake, where his family operated the local weekly newspaper, The Chronotype, for more than 90 years.

In 2012, a reporting team he led at the Philadelphia Inquirer won the Pulitzer Prize for public service journalism for a series on widespread violence – an average of 25 assaults a day -- in the local public schools. The book, Pulitzer’s Gold, published by Columbia University Press, devotes a chapter to the reporting project, which led to widespread reforms. In 2011, his reporting team won the Guggenheim Award for Excellence in Criminal Justice Reporting. He is also the recipient of a Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association. As a foreign correspondent, Leary covered the fall of communism in Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and Romania. He interviewed and reported on many of the leading figures of the time, including Lech Walesa, Vaclav Havel and Helmut Kohl. He was an eyewitness to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
