Tom Rosenstiel is a journalist, author, executive director of the American Press Institute and fellow of the Brookings Institution. He was a co-founder of the Pew Research Center and formerly directed the Project for Excellence in Journalism.

Rosenstiel's seven non-fiction books cover journalism, politics, government, culture and ethics, among other topics. His book The Elements of Journalism,co-authored with former New York Times bureau chief Bill Kovach, has been hailed as an essential book on journalism, and for its discussion of the relationship of journalism and democracy. He is a former press critic and correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, a media commentator for MSNBC, and correspondent for Newsweek, among others.
